Skin provides us with a cover. It fits closely, and
at every point it is carefully adjusted to
thickness, elasticity, and surface texture.
Skin is the largest organ of the body. It gives
us a sense of touch, and regulates heat
loss, and controls blood pressure.
Skin is waterproof, yet it allows water to pass
through
in one direction but not the other. Skin is able
to cope with most of the chemical insults we inflict on it
(pollution,
soap, detergent, deodorant, perfume, cleaners, etc.) Skin is a good
heat insulator. It grows thicker where the abrasion is higher. Dry skin
is also a good insulation against electricity.
kin also protects us against infection from bacteria and
virus. But having said this, skin provides a home for millions
of germs and many varieties of skin-dwelling organisms too
small to see. It is because of this micro-ecosystem on our skin that we
maintain good health - unless the ecosystem is damage.
Skin is so tought it can be found with its fingerprints still intact in an Egyptian mummy some 2000 years old.
Skin absorbs ultraviolet rays
from the sun and uses them to convert chemicals into vitamin D, which
the body needs for proper utilization of calcium.
If you skin was spread out flat, and average 'shrink wrap body suit' would be about 2 square meters
in area.
As far as anyone knows, humans are the only creatures who blush - thanks to skin.
"I
am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our
iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up
unto the heavens." Ezra 9:6
