now, and the gun dropped to the ground. Stubbs jumped out of the hole, barely avoiding Tucker, who collapsed towards him.
"You ...!" gasped Tucker, clutching his stomach.
"I told you," said Stubbs, "I'm a believer."
……………………………..
When Stubbs returned to the people, he had many tales to tell. He described the new land, the place called Eden, and he showed the people the sketches. He told the eager crowd of how the land lay, and what the soil was like. He drew a diagram on a sheet of cloth and marked the trail they would follow.
And when someone asked him where Tucker was, he showed great sadness and told how Tucker had died of poison, and how he, Stubbs, had faithfully dug a grave for him. He explained how he had tried to save Tucker's life, by praying and offering him food and drink from his own pack, but Tucker had slipped away. And all the people believed him, because Pathfinders were men of integrity.
So many years later, after Stubbs died, a memorial was built, on which the names of the first men to come that way were written. Able Stubbs and Cain Tucker, and nobody ever knew that, in the place called Eden, Able slew Cain for the second time.
