| Our sin is often seen a a weight of burden. The Christian classic "Pilgrim's Progress" has a character named "Christian" who has a large burden attached to his back that he cannot remove. In the story he finally loses the burden at the foot of the cross.
"Pilgrim's Progress" was written by John Bunyan and was first published in 1678.
It immediatedly became a popular book and many versions of it are still published today.
