Preview of Handout:![]() Wording of this Handout:Great men - great mistakesWe often hear the names of great men, and it is quite right that they should be remembered, because they have contributed much to the world - but sometimes these great men made great mistakes. Here are a few of their mistakes: Aristotle, the brilliant Greek thinker, thought that life appeared out of nowhere. All you needed, he said, was a pile of ingredients and hey-presto! life would come bouncing or crawling out. Simon Newcombe said "No heavier-than-air machine will ever fly. Not long after he said this, the Wright brothers flew their first airplane. Brilliant scientists Ernst Mach said "There is no such thing as an atom." Percival Lowell, an astronomer, said "The lines on Mars are canals built by aliens." William Pickering said "The spots on Mars are huge swarms of insects" Brilliant physicist Nicola Tesla said "Atomic power will never be harnessed by Man." And famous New Zealander Ernest Rutherford said 'The power of atoms will never be controlled or used by Man." They were all wrong! Unlike great men (and women) of this Word are NEVER wrong. We ought to put our trust in the Bible and not listen to the shifting opinions and theories of Science. The Bible says : "Guard the truths entrusted to you, shunning irreligious and frivolous talk, and controversy with what is falsely called knowledge'; (science) 1 Timothy 6:20 (The Weymouth New Testament in Modern Speech) |
