Preview of Handout: Wording of this Handout:CrucifixionSome religions teach that God is detached from earth, just watching us, and living in serene harmony while we here struggle along by ourselves. But when Jesus died on the cross, he demonstrated God’s total involvement with Man. Jesus felt more pain than you or I have felt, or ever will feel, in our whole lives. Crucifixion usually started with a whipping. The whip (or flagrum) had pieces of bone of glass attached to the thongs. The sharp bits ripped the flesh, and sometimes victims died before they were crucified. Jesus had a crown of thorns pressed into his head. He was also tired after a whole night of mockery and trials, and he was hungry. Victims often carried their own beam of wood. When they arrived at the site, they were nailed to it. Their leg bones were broken so they could not push up on the nail through their feet and breathe better. Flies, tetanus, cramps, delirium and spasms followed. When Jesus knew the time was fulfilled he breathed out his last breath and refused to breath again - thus giving his life for all the world. What amazing love! The Bible says: "Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost" = gave up his breath.
