Preview of Handout: Wording of this Handout:GodspellI was living in Christchurch when the show Godspell came to the theatre there. It was a very popular show, and it gathered a lot of advertising and publicity. At the time Ray Comfort had a bus, with the words "The gift of God is everlasting life" down the side. He and I and five or six other Christians drove the bus round the city when Godspell was on. Why? Because we wanted to let people know that he theatre production was not really the gospel. You see, what Godspell presents is a popular Jesus, a show time Jesus, with songs and music and great entertainment. Many people are attracted to Jesus when they think they will be entertained by him! But the real Jesus, the Jesus of the Bible, is not an entertainer. He would never sing or dance on a stage. He has a far more serious mission than simply amusing or entertaining people. The trouble is, when people don't read their Bibles, they don't find the real Jesus, so they go through life thinking He is one thing when He is really something else. The Bible says "And he that takes not his cross, and follows after me, is not worthy of me". Matthew 10:38 |
