Wording of this Handout:

Being told off

I think that probably nobody likes to be told off - unless they're desperate for attention. Its embarrassing. It hurts the pride. I makes one feel like a failure. It sometimes makes one want to give up and leave.

Some telling-offs are give because the teller-offer is mean, or nasty, or a bully. That sort of person doesn't matter too much. We should feel sorry for them. They have a problem which has nothing to do with us.

But other times we are told off because the teller-offer is really trying to help us. "You shouldn't have run across the road without looking!" "You must never stick your fork into the plug socket!" "Don't talk like that!" "Stay out of the car!" "Leave the medicine cupboard alone!" "Watch out!" "Look out!" A good telling off will warn us against danger, and help us to make or do something better.

Sometimes Jesus tells us off. He does this through our conscience, or sometimes through other people. If we aren't listening, we may end up in dangerous circumstances, and learn the hard way. The best way to avoid being told off by Jesus is to keep living the way he wants you to.

Jesus said: "Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline." Revelation 3:19
