Wording of this Handout:

Freedom

What is freedom? There are many kinds.

You can set a dog free of its leash, or a prisoner free of his prison. You can set a sick person free from their illness, or a poor person free from their poverty. Freedom means many different things to different people.

What did Jesus mean when he said he could set people free? Was he being political? or super-spiritual?

I think Jesus meant freedom in the sense of setting people free from every kind of sin-caused problem. Bad habits, poverty, sickness, stress, political oppression, you name it Whatever sin has caused, Jesus can break it.

But sometimes freedom can be on the inside. You could be a slave, but your heart can be free. You could be a cripple, but your freedom is on the way when Jesus gives you a new body. Old age, sickness and death are all areas where Jesus can set us free too. On the bigger scale, Jesus will one day set whole nations free - when His Kingdom rule goes right round the world.

So when you hear someone say "I wish I was freer' you might like to point out that Jesus is the way to complete freedom.

Jesus said "If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed!" John 8:36 (New King James version)
