The However Trees
by Steve Gracie © 2007

How many "however" trees

Are growing in your heart?
Do they grow just how they please?
The vines hidden in the dark

Lord I will answer the call,
And give generously to the church
However, I did not mean it all
I only meant this much!

Lord I'll give up my precious time
To be guided by your hand
However, Monday eight 'til nine
Suits better with my plans

Lord I want to read your Word
To study night and day
However, that's a big demand;
I'll read in church on Sunday

Lord I know that I should pray
And wait upon your grace
However, that just takes too long
Can we perhaps move up the pace?

Lord the Holy Spirit,
Is the lifeblood flowing within
However, I'll just squeeze the tap
And leave a little tricklin'

Lord I know there's work to do
And I know you gave me gifts
However they are mine so now
I'll use them as I wish

Lord what has happened to my fruit?
Everything's gone rotten!
However much I try to fight
I feel I am forgotten

Do not plant two kinds of seed
On the same plot of land
Everything will be defiled
Both of the vine and your hand

I am the true vine says the Son
The gardener is my Father
We will cut off every one
Of the fruitless "however".
