A Christmas Prayer
by Kathleen Higham

My eldest brother died so young
A ravaged body, he was only eight
I remember everything about him
For he was my soul mate

My younger brother was a dear
He was blonde and fair and sweet
This one was always beside me
The boy, constantly under my feet

A life that was all too short
And his age was only four
The last breath escaped so softly
As death knocked at his door

Then my father, a vibrant man
A broken heart for sure
Scarred by the loss of his sons
When he died, no more to endure

But mother was inconceivable
I thought time was on her side
On that morning, I found her
I could not believe she died

Stunned with shock, the youngest
He took me to my knees
Left the earth by his own hand
God help me, help me please

I have lost all of my family
It should not be this way
No fire burning in my heart
On this beautiful Christmas Day

Asking for this gift from You
Lord, breathe on me today
Fan the embers of my cold heart
Dear Lord, to You I pray.
