When I met Him
by mike green © 2002

Traveling the road
That meanders left and right
Never really getting there
Suffering from loss of sight

Thinking, "I'm in control"
"This is the direction I want to take"
"I am enjoying this, I really am"
Forcing myself to like the decisions I make

Traveling the road that winds
Blowing with the wind
Never really getting anywhere
Will the wandering ever end?

Always stumbling
But you never really fall
So you think your doing all right
Things could be worse, after all

So there I am
Groping in the dark
Feeling like it's under control
But falling short of the mark

But then it happens, I trip
I begin to fall
I reach out to catch myself
I yell out, but no one hears my call

When I hit the bottom
It hurts to my core
Even though I was able to grab something
The fall was crushing, I felt as though I could live no more

I slowly opened my eyes
From the brightness, I let out a gasp
I see an old rugged timber
Held tightly in my grasp

I looked up at the timber
It was a cross that towered in the sky
And nailed upon it was a man
I heard Him as He sighed

He looked down at me
With so much loving kindness in His eyes
He told me to get on my feet
He smiled at me, much to my surprise

He said, "I've been waiting for you"
"welcome home my friend"
"I would have waited longer"
"Just to tell you that I love you, in the end"

As he told me this
I could see the love in His eyes
With His body broke, and His bloodied brow
I heard words of warmth, instead of cries

I reached up to Him
And said, "Please, let me help you down"
"It will be all right, I can mend your wounds"
He looked at me without a sound

I stood there, still holding the cross
I saw His blood, it was on my hand
I continued to look at Him
Why He was up there, I didn't understand

Then began to speak
He said, "I suffer for you"
"I am our Father's gift
So that you may know a happiness that is true?"

He said, "The time is now my friend"
"Let Me take your place"
"I will take the suffering from you"
"I am the gift, you are freed by our Father's grace"

I felt my heart lift
For my sin, He has paid the price
Then He said, "Now go out and share the love of the Lamb"
"The Lamb Jesus Christ"
