Two Breaths
by Kathleen Higham

No memory of my first breath
But a soothing warmth was there
The beginning of my journey
Breathing in, I had no care.

Never considering the awesomeness
Of how many breaths we take
Until the last is eminent
Then a weakened heart might break.

The first breath begins my life
And many years have passed
What did I do with this life?
It seems to have sped so fast.

A mind cannot comprehend it
The simplicity of this act
One day we breathe, then not
It is a most certain fact.

No memory of my first breath
The last, I will expire
I am just a breath away
Inside me, a burning fire.

Though this earthly air will leave me
My breath will join with Him
Taking me to the Heavenly realm
Already my past becomes dim.

Two breaths span a life-time
Wondering, what did I do?
Now, I pray the question
Did I breathe my life for You?

No memory of the first breath
The last, I will expire
Your Holiness will fill me
Breathing in my heart's desire.

A heavy sigh releases me
For You have heard my prayer
No memory of my first breath
But, Yours has filled the air.

Two breaths span a life-time
And when my life is through
The last breath may leave me
But, I breathed my life for You.
