Apologize
by Kathleen Higham

Sitting with my friend one day
I asked her for a prayer
Someone I loved was hurting
I knew my friend would care.

Telling her of the circumstance
Of a marriage that was broken
A prior affair brought them together
I was stunned by her words spoken.

Did anyone ever apologize?
To the wife whose life was shattered
Paralyzed in my seat, I was
Because I never thought she mattered.

My heart was completely shaken
And I felt disgusting despair
Knowing I had done the same
As I sat there in my chair.

In that moment, I promised
God, if it is in Your will
I want to say I am sorry
For it pains me, pains me still.

Oh, the ruthlessness of my life
That has passed before my eyes
Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me
For that time of bitter lies.

God, if it is in Your will
I will fall down at her feet
Then, apologize to this woman
If ever we should meet.
