There Once Was A Manger
by Linda Shanks © 2007

There once was a manger
in a far away land,
Found in a stable
that's not very grand.

It's function was food
for the animals near,
With grain and of hay
it was filled, that is clear.

One night in the darkness
a couple did come.
Their need was desperate,
much more than some.

A baby was born
that very night.
And He lay in a manger
as His mother's delight.

The manger held close
the babe as it lay,
Quietly sleeping
on its bed of hay.

Then shepherds did come
to the manger with child.
A story they told ...
what they saw in the wild.

Of "Angels," they said,
appeared in the sky,
"Glory to God,
to the One Most High."

"A Saviour is born
this very day..."
In the City of David,
they would know the way.

Though strangers and mangers
would soon depart,
His mother did ponder
these things in her heart.

God sent His Best,
His Son, He did give,
For those who will LOVE Him
Eternal life they will live.

There once was a manger
who saw the light,
The LIGHT OF THE WORLD
It was quite a sight
