On Bethlehem's Nightsong
by Joy Wieters

The music of the nighttime,
Does come surround me now;
Picks me up and carries me,
As I wonder "How?".

How will I ever become
Bold enough to life?
How can I grow up enough,
To have something to give?

I now see the manger,
It's coming into view!
And now I see dear Mary,
And there is Joseph too!

They're sitting on a dirt floor,
They don't look very nice.
The stable's also dirty,
I'm sure there must be mice.

But it doesn't seem to matter
As the two stare at the crib.
The realization of who this is -
God will wear a bib!

And I am whisked away again,
On twinkly, cheering sound.
I see a great angel,
And shepherds on the ground.

They look on in terror,
I look on and smile.
They will see their Savior,
In just a little while.

And then I see a palace,
Adorned in gold and white.
And inside sleeps King Herod,
Unsuspecting of the night.

And then, of course, I see rich men,
Staring at the sky.
Wide eyes behold a brilliant star,
I hear a joyful sigh.

Indeed this was the night, I think,
The greatest night of all.
How many knew in this child's hand
The nations rise and fall?

This miracle sometimes does seem,
A worn-out, common thing.
But we need to see again,
To ride the music's strings.

To venture into Bethlehem,
And even lands afar,
To see this not-so-common thing,
A baby in a barn.

That night few knew the weight of the
Significance of it.
But truly there is more to see,
On the nightsong I will see it.
