THE PRICE OF SUCCESS
by Mike Brotherton © 1995

I have traveled down this lonesome road, for all my life I have been told that the road to success is paved with gold and the treasures of life is the money I hold.

But the road that I traveled is a winding trail. It twists and it turns like a serpent's tail. And the pain that it brings is a bitter fire, because the devil is the king of liars.

Broad is the road to destruction but narrow is the way. The road to success is a fine line and there is a price to pay.

You cannot buy it with silver. You cannot buy it with gold. But the price that you pay is the time of day lost and the nights that get very cold.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick. The remedy is a bitter pill. Time is short and success is sweet. A desire fulfilled makes the heart complete.

Where your treasure is your heart will be, where moths corrupt your very soul.
Your silos are full and your barns aren't enough to hold all your sorrows and the tares you grow.

I've given up my loved ones to find that pot of gold. My life has been very empty as I am growing very old.

If I could do it all again I would change things from the start. My treasure would be my family and my goal would be their heart.

Success is not a pot of gold or the money that you earn. It is the love that you can share and the lessons that you learn.
