The Big House
by Gertrude Jefferies

She sat there beside the open fire
Stirring idly in her stew,
She was far away, her mind on things
That she'd dare tell only a few.

The Big House tonight was all ablaze,
Lights were shining from every room,
Much music and laughter filled the air,
But in her heart there was only gloom.

Her ragged attire bespoke her state,
Her dwelling also attested
She was not free, for she was a servant,
Her worth always being contested.

The awful ache in her heart grows daily,
The heavy weight of it slows her down,
And the pain of it all she can hardly endure,
But she bears it all without a frown.

The lights of the Big House seem to draw her,
She sits and stares at them until
Then, making a great decision,
She rises and starts up the hill.

Every step makes her more determined.
As faster she begins to walk,
Sees Him in the door of the Big House
Will He accept her or will He just mock?

She stands before Him, at the door of the Big House,
He looks at her with eyes full of love,
Then with open arms invites her,
Into His light and warmth from above.
