The Gem
by Patricia Joan Polhans

A little gem in
God's shirt pocket
Is closer to him
Than a picture in a locket.
Dear to his heart
it will always be
Reflecting its light
for all the world to see.
Each one unique
In their own way
Growing more precious
each and every day.
And as it began to grow
It,then, came to be
A living stone
That was hewn by thee.
To some individuals
'twas a precious stone
Still to others
It was just a bone.
Each began to mature
With hues of color
Reaching out,
Touching many others.
As it grew more
precious to him
In his shirt pocket
is where it lived.
Safely it stayed,
secure and alive
In his shirt pocket
where it thrived.
