The Undeserving by Mike Kotz I broke it open And touched it to my lips. I only wanted a taste, But at what cost? To see the place I'd once called Home - Now on the other side of the blaze. Oh, I never wanted it really, But it drew me - Convinced me of its Resolve… And she and I stood Mouths agape, hearts heavy Heads spinning Hopeless, as it were, Knowing one thing for certain We had to get back Home Then a figure seen through smoke Encumbered with a cross Passed us in agony And took ours, too. What were we to do? But to stand there and view The death of God's own For the undeserving. Crossing the line of fire The flames singing His brow Baptizing him in scorch But He pursued something That only He could And the arms went up And the nails went through And the head bled And the feet folded over And the side spilled forth And the cry pierced silence Why, Father?! Why?! And then, as life left His eyes The swords fell The gates spread wide And as though it had been an eternity A Father's joy bade us, "Come Home." |
