What Kind of Man Was This?
by Tony Fox © 2006

They marched Him up Calvary with a cross on His back.
No mercy they showed Him, all compassion they lacked.
They charged Him with crimes that He did not do,
Yet, He carried out their sentence for me and for you.

What kind of Man was this on the cross?
What had He done to pay such a cost?
There must be a reason He was there that day.
There must be some answer for the price that He paid.

His name was Jesus and His mission the cross;
To seek and to save all those who are lost.
And so He marched on, with a cross on His back;
Though they showed Him no mercy and compassion they lacked.

While there on the cross He looked out in time;
He saw in the future your life and mine.
He knew why He hung on the cross in that hour;
He died there to save us from Hell’s consuming fire.

They watched Him die harshly there on that day;
Some gestured and hissed, and some just walked away.
Some questioned quietly, “What kind of Man was this”
Who died such a death and Whose life would be missed?

What kind of Man would take up His cross –
to seek and to save the weak and the lost?
What kind of Man would let others jeer –
as the crowds looked on and His side felt the spear?

What kind of Man would die there for me –
So that Hell I would miss and in Heaven I’d be?
He was the Man with a cross on His back;
Pure mercy He showed and no compassion He lacked.

(Thank You Lord for dying for us!)
