Innocence
by Kathleen Higham

My innocence was stolen
As I cried in the night
A little heart so burdened
Not strong enough to fight.

The pain comes to haunt me
Even though I have grown
Happy moments touch me, but
Memories come when I'm alone.

There can be no answer
For the suffering of a child
I should have been protected
Instead, I was defiled.

My innocence was stolen
Thoughts torment my soul
Seeking God in anguish
Lord, please make me whole.

It was not for me to say
This heartbreak lingers on
Having grown, years passed by
My childhood long gone.

My prayers are surrendered
To my God who was there
Holding me through it all
The suffering He would share.

My innocence was stolen
Never felt so betrayed, but
God never left my side
He stayed, then He prayed.

The offense was heinous
Yet He held me tight
Though my innocence was stolen
I am perfect in His sight.

He is with us till the end of time...
