Never Enough Hugs
by Kathleen Higham

More than once I've wondered
When another friend I find
A tiny woman with piercing eyes
Hands artistically designed.

She is an amazing woodcarver
A gift from a scientific mind
Intricate thoughts flow from her
To a twig that she might find.

This skill completely mesmerizing
My heart delights in seeing
Creatures bursting from a stick
Her vision becomes a being.

Marveling at her workmanship
In complete awe, I stood
Aquatic and anatomically perfect
Animals birthed from a piece of wood.

She spoke of a career past
When her eyes studied that cell
Feeling the pain of life defiled
By a disease that came from hell.

Remembering when all would fail
Never enough hugs, she said
That was the Godly moment
Those words etched in my head.

A lovely woman carving hugs
Brought a shiver to my soul
Never enough hugs indeed
The scientist shares a lofty goal.

Her work, God's Masterpiece
In them one could soar
Exquisitely she labors on
Carving hugs forevermore.
