The Deputation Trail
by Deborah Smith Plemmons

My husband was called to be a missionary.
You say, "What fun!" But on the contrary.
Don't get me wrong: a foreign field--no fret.
It was getting there that many trials were met.

We packed our bags and began our journey,
With three boys, a girl, myself and my honey.
We travelled on the road near and far,
In a borrowed van, and later a car.

A car crash, two narrow escapes, and a death;
Overwhelmed at times, we still kept the faith.
Bookings cancelled, promised support wasn't there,
But we still felt God's presence everywhere.

There were times some of us were sick with the flu;
Not much cash on hand when the bills came due.
God provided our needs each and every day.
We trusted Him to guide us on our way.

We travelled to several States across the U.S.
At most stops, we were tired, hungry, and a mess.
We'd clean up in a hurry and put on a smile,
And go to the church and remain quite a while.

The boys would sing and my husband would preach.
I think the message some souls, it would reach.
We'd receive a love offering when the service was done,
Then we were off again, on the road to the next one.

We visited many churches in Indiana,
Texas, the Dakotas, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
We were in many other States; I can't remember them all,
But when God directs you, you heed to His call.

Whether your deputation time is long or short,
Try to keep the faith and maintain a good report.
Because God is in control of every situation,
One day you'll reach your intended destination.
