The Gift of Salvation
by Sarah Lewry

I remember when your hands
first reached out to me.
In your hands, you held a package.
You held it out to me and asked,
“Do you want this?”

I reached out timidly and
accepted the gift gratefully.
I always wondered what was
inside, but I was scared to find out.

For years, I held the box in my arms.
Finally, my curiosity overcame me,
and I began to unwrap the gift.
I am still unwrapping it today.

I still do not fully understand
why you have given me this gift.
And although I hold on to the gift,
there are days when I doubt that
it is truly mine.

It is my prayer that I will one day
peel back the last layer of paper
and unwrap this great mystery.
Until then, Lord,
I am still struggling to unwrap this gift
