A Christmas Poem
by Bill Keysaer © 2008

It was the night of the first Christmas they were out in a field
A long night ahead a shepherds staff they did wield
The sheep lying down didn't make a peep
Some of the shepherds were half a sleep

It was just what they did; they do it all the time
One had just picked fresh fruit from the vine
To watch over the flocks it was their job
To look for those who would steal or rob

This is the shepherd's life; it's what they do at night
But this time was different; there came a great light
They were paralyzed with fear beyond all belief
An Angel of the Lord had appeared at their feet

But the angel told them do not be afraid
For it is good news I have come to proclaim
Today in the town of David a Savior is born
He is the Christ, a baby his cloths ragged and torn

When this had been said the rest did appear
Heavenly angels were everywhere both far and near
The first thing they did was to begin to sing praise
And praise Him they did their voices were raised

Glory to God glory in the highest
Peace to men on whom his favor rests
This is what was said and then they weren't there
The angels back to heaven, the shepherds just stared

Then the shepherds said to each other let's make the trip
To Bethlehem they went, and pretty DARN quick
They found Mary and Joseph to them they were strangers
And there was baby Jesus asleep in the manger

Once they had seen Him they went to shout from the walls
The good news of the baby who had come to save all
Then there was Mary who treasured all these things
For she had just given birth to the new born King
