River of Time
by Janet Martin © 2009

I can hardly believe it as I stand by its side
Gazing into life's river and its merciless tide,
Caught in its current are the sweet yester-years
Fleeting treasures midst laughter and tears

I can hardly believe it as I pause by its side,
Whilst still precious hours so soundlessly glide,
They slip to its depths to return never-more
Though I may stand begging and pleading on shore

I can hardly believe it as I weep by its side,
But my tears like all days are swept up in its tide,
I see sorrow and blessing slip from my grasp
As life's river claims them, their memories I clasp

Yet I have a comfort as I stand by its side,
For someday twill be I who is caught in that tide,
And I'll cross those waters where forever I'll be
In Heaven with Jesus for eternity
