The title of this story is a play on the word 'lines' since the story is made of lines, but the main character is more interested in what hangs on a line than what the story lines tell. Most people have secrets, some large some small. We ought to respect the privacy of other people, and not pry into their lives. Old people should be respected, not bothered by nosy-parkers. This story is about a kid who goes way too far, and gets into trouble – yet it is quite amusing that people hang so many personal items in full view of the public on thin wires – open to all who may wish to look. So much can be deduced from what hangs on a washing line! "You shalt rise up before the hoary head (old person with white hair), and honour the face of the old man." Leviticus 19:32 "The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness." Proverbs 16:31 "Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king." 1 Peter 2:17 "Honour all (men)" means to show respect to all people.

A little story that asks a question about treating all people as precious, and asks where we draw our personal value system from. So many messages come to us through the schools or TV programs these days which seem to imply all all people are equal, or valuable or something like that, without telling us on what these value statements are based. It is no good saying we think someone is precious because we think they are, because that it is nothing more than our opinion. Someone else may have a different opinion, and who is to say that one opinion is better than another? This is what happened with the German Nazi Party as they decided that Jews and other ‘undesirables’ were inferior to so-called pure Germans. Discrimination flourishes without some set of absolutes which tell us, from a source outside of ourselves, what is and what isn’t ‘x’, which is why ‘weeds’ can also be ‘valuable plants’ depending on how we look at them. "But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. Psalms 22:6 "Fear not, you worm Jacob, and you men of Israel; I will help you, says the Lord … "Isaiah 41:14 "But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man." Hebrews 2:9 Humans are both infinitely precious to God and inescapably sinful. Created in God’s image we still bear the imprint of the divine, yet fallen and corrupt we are also repellent to our Maker. It is a curious dichotomy. Only the second Adam, the Lord Jesus, can bridge the gulf, bringing sinners and God together though His death and resurrection.
