A funny story about an old farmer and his wife who are "taken to the cleaners" by a crafty, greedy real estate agent, but thanks to a series of quirky events his money-grubbing schemes blow up in his face. I think what I wanted to say seriously through this story was the thoughts of the old farmer, as he realized he was close to the end of his life. He reflects on the fact that his life is nearly over, and all the things he wanted to do in his life, are now almost out of reach. He regrets not having done what he dreamed of doing when he was younger. "Lord, make me to know my end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am." Psalms 39:4 "Redeeming the time, because the days are evil." Ephesians 5:16 "Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time." Colossians 4:5 "Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do it." Proverbs 3:27

A fantasy story in which an exchange is made between one world and another. The main character in the story brings about her own misfortune as a result of her own disobedience. She is already a liar as the story begins, and the consequences of her subsequent disobedient behaviour cause her to become trapped. The reader is challenged to decide whether Kylie, the main character, deserves what happens to her. "As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come." Proverbs 26:2

A science fiction story about a probe sent from one world to another. It records the words spoken by men 3000 years earlier, one of whom managed to make the same journey across time back to the world the probe came from. In this story I had a very small idea, which became rather buried under the weight of the story, that of our words being recorded. A friend of mine was saying how he discovered an old tape, in which he could hear the voice of one of his children, now much older. Jesus also said a very strange thing when he told some people that "the stones would cry out" if people did not speak. (Luke 19:40) "But I (Jesus) say to you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment." Matthew 12:36 "For by your words you shall be justified, and by you words you shalt be condemned." Matthew 12:37

A futuristic story in which children must pass a computer-assisted exam to be allowed to live. I wrote this story when I considered how, through eugenics, the Nazi Party tried to eliminate all people who were considered "undesirable". In a similar way, farmers cull animals that are deficient or unwanted, and in agriculture anything with a spot or disease is removed. Since sinful, fallen man puts such a heavy store on human intelligence, it seems likely that children considered intellectually deficient might one day be culled from the population. "Thus says the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches." Jeremiah 9:23 "Be not wise in your own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil." Proverbs 3:7 "Truly I say to you, Whoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein." Luke 18:17

Dear old grandpa is about to die, and for ten years he has bottled up his thoughts. Finally, in his last few breaths he says what he should have said ten years earlier. I wrote this story from a deep place in my heart, and from personal experience, because it has long troubled me how so many people lose their precious lives to diversions and trivia and grudges, and vices, when God wants them to leave all that stuff behind and get on with really living the life they were designed for! "Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid." Luke 8:35 "And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn you: go, and sin no more." John 8:11 "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:32 "If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed." John 8:36

On the surface this is just a very short, funny story, more like a joke than a story, but tucked inside the "joke" is a child who is confined to a wheelchair, a paraplegic, who remains optimistic and positive throughout all the trials. As God says, we should always give thanks "for" all things, and "in" all things, because no matter how bleak life may be, there is always something good to think about. "They (God's mercies) are new every morning: great is (His) faithfulness." Lamentations 3:23 "Giving thanks always for all things to God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Ephesians 5:20 (Jesus said: Don't say: "There are yet four months, and then comes harvest? Behold, I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest." John 4:35 I have always loved this attitude ... Jesus saw the potential, when other people saw nothing much worth their effort.

This was a difficult story to write because it is about a real child whose story appeared in the news. Her mother, an intellectually handicapped woman, confined her child for years in a single room. I decided to add a fantasy element, because I know children are masters when it comes to compensating during hardship. The bear is a symbol of love, and deliverance. I picked the name Kasia when I noticed it in a the verse in Psalm 45:8 "All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad." "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me (Jesus), because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised." Luke 4:18 "That you may say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Shew yourselves." Isaiah 49:9
