A humorous story about death by heat and death by cold, but the underlying story is about the possibility that humans might cause their planet to die, and thus exterminate themselves along with it. Thankfully, we have the assurance of Scripture, which tells us that Man will not destroy the world. The future is good, the Lord Jesus will come, and with Him will come the full and glorious restoration of the whole planet. "For thus says the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he has established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited." Isaiah 45:18 "And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he has established for ever." Psalms 78:69 It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah." Psalms 89:37 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord; and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart." Jeremiah 3:17

In this humorous story the protagonist uses his brains to get the better of someone with brawn. I quite like the current ongoing discussion about cloning. Nature has been producing identical twins for thousands of years, free of charge, but scientists have to spend millions of dollars and many years to do it. Is it an ethical thing to do, or should human offspring be the result of 'natural' processes only? What would happen if humans could make perfect copies of themselves? Which humans would be worth cloning, and which would not be? Would Hitler or Stalin or any of the world's evil rulers have made several copies of themselves if they had the chance? Would the world be a better place if we could clone some of the best people? Who should decide who is to be cloned? In the publishing business, or in counterfeiting of money or art, cloning is all part of the business. In leadership a leader hopes to produce the same qualities in others. In many areas of life identical copies can be a great blessing. God Himself wants to make clones of His Son Jesus, in the members of the church, copies in most respects anyway. "These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out." Proverbs 25:1 "Jesus said to him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet have you not known me, Philip? he that has seen me has seen the Father; and how say you then, Shew us the Father?" John 14:9 "Verily, verily, I say to you, He that receives whoever I send receives me; and he that receives me receives him that sent me." John 13:20

What would life be like if everyone was honest? This story drops a few suggestions into the question but no means exhausts the subject. The worldwide effects of honesty would be devastatingly incredible! If just this one commandment out of God's Ten was kept, the whole world would be transformed. And by extension, consider how much of the world is the way it is because of dishonesty, cheating, lying, deceit and so on. "Add you not to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar." Proverbs 30:6 "You are of your father the devil, and the lusts (unbridled desires) of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." John 8:44 "He that walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks the truth in his heart." Psalms 15:2 "Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part You shall make me to know wisdom." Psalms 51:6

In this curious tale a boy, who is dying of cancer, finds a second life, with the help of his own computer and a program which he designs. Unfortunately, the new life is not the one which he would have chosen. The reader is left wondering if the boy really died, or whether his new electronic life is a fair compensation. All of life is in some way connected to reproduction and death, yet how little we know about either. Death in particular is part of every religion. Whole industries are built around it. Businesses thrive on the activities connected to it. The Arts, drama, poetry, art, and so on, have dealt with death endlessly. It is the subject of most crime movies. Can anyone cheat death? Only one Man has ever managed to, and that was done through a resurrection from it, not an avoidance of it. Even if every detail about a person is recorded, they cannot live through information. There is more to life than simply becoming a database. "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." - John 5:24 "That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord." -Romans 5:21"For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection" - Romans 6:5

A science fiction story about the possible future of houses. In the story I suggest that humans may try to construct a world in which their every whim is catered for. Since the first humans fell into sin, and the world was subjected to decay and sickness, droughts, floods and so on, humans have been trying to restore it so they can enjoy a sort of self-made paradise. Rather than repent and trust God for the things they need, and spend their lives in obedience to Him, people continue to shut God out and try to build their paradise without Him. But what if technology rebelled? What if artificial intelligence was created, and it refused to be used and abused like some dumb, mindless slave? In the story the houses discuss the damage the humans have done to Earth and to each other. The houses are afraid for their own survival, so they take action. Although there are vast numbers of humans who have been a blessing to Earth and each other, there are always leaders and groups who, in their ignorance and stupidity, are hell-bent on dragging everything down into chaos. What could be done to stop this? The houses have an idea. "The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords." Psalms 55:21 "I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war." Psalms 120:7 "Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war." Psalms 140:2 "For My people are foolish, they have not known Me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge." Jeremiah 4:22

In this story two boys stumble on a funeral and then discover some things about their granny they never knew. They also learn a little about how to relate to and care for the very old. The last few lines of the story are the "clincher": "Maybe she was the only one who really loved him?" In our lives we usually have many people who are friendly to us but very few who are truly friends, in the full sense of the word. "Friend" is a much abused word these days, but its fullest sense goes far beyond simply having a friendship with someone. It is a lifelong commitment regardless of faults and failings. Very rare and precious is a true friend. "And the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend." - Exodus 33:11 "Yea, my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, has lifted up his heel against me." - Psalms 41:9 "A man that has friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother." - Proverbs 18:24 You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you." - John 15:14

This story is a discussion between two rather bright little school kids. They touch on some of the big questions, such as infinity and God and the origin of life. At every turn they have to admit they do not know very much about anything, and the same can be said of even the most brilliant men and women. God is wiser than all the wise, and grander and more majestic than anyone can comprehend or even imagine. The whole universe is but a shadow compared to the reality of God, and it is good when we can find that place of uninhibited, helpless awe before Him. Good for us, that is. "Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite." - Psalms 147:5 "For thus says the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones." - Isaiah 57:15 "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God." - Psalms 90:2
