Seriously Weird: Seeds of Distortion

Mum told me over and over again, "Never eat what you don't know about", and I didn't, but I still got into heaps of other trouble. But Mum couldn't tell me off because she was just as guilty as me when it came to that stuff. This probably doesn't make much sense?

I'd better go back to when it all started.

I was heading home from a game of soccer at the park. It was the afternoon and my friend James was helping me kick a ball down the street. He was also saving it from going out on the road when I booted it too hard. He was a good goalie, on and off the field.

And Killer, James' little black and white terrier was there too.

I didn't like this stretch of the city. The gardeners along this bit must have had poor eyesight, because they never cut back their gardens. Couldn't they see what a mess those gardens were? It was like a forest along that stretch of road - trees all over the walls, plants hanging down across the footpath like they were going to cover it completely, bushes leaning out of gateways. "Disgraceful", my Mum said whenever we walked that way. She always crossed the road, or went down the middle.

And there were huge, vicious dogs behind some of the walls too. They'd leap up at us as we went past, and growl like wolves, or bark savagely, as if they were just drooling to kill us. I had glimpses of the dogs, sometimes. Rows of white teeth. Dark angry eyes. Big, solid muscles covered in black hair.

James kicked the ball across the street to me. I trapped it with my foot and sent it skidding back him, but there was a car coming, and it bounced off the side door. The driver shouted something at us as he drove by. Lucky for us his window was up.

But the ball went up a driveway and disappeared into a garden.

"Its in there!" said James.

"Any dogs?"

"Can't see any!"

"I'll get it!"

I crept up the driveway. It was over grown with trees and thick with plants. I could hear bees, or flies, buzzing about everywhere.

The ball was stuck under a tree branch close to the ground so I hooked it out with my foot and dribbled it
