Wording of this Handout:

Why do kangaroos hop? The first answer is 'Because that's the way God made them', but another reason is this: kangaroos use less energy hopping than they would if they were running or galloping. In fact, they are so efficient, they use less energy to hop than they do to just stand still!

Because there are so many different species of kangaroo, some people think kangaroos are changing into other animals (evolution) but of course this is silly. Just like dogs, there is plenty of room for different shapes and colours, but they are all kangaroos, no matter what they look like.

How fast can a kangaroo hop? Well, a cheetah can run at 100 kph, an ostrich can manage 65 kph, a man can run at 36 kph and a kangaroo can hit 50 kph top speed.

There are over 100 species of kangaroo in Australia and they are all sizes.

They have many different names too, such as wallabies, bettongs, potoroos and rat-kangaroos.

Mother kangaroos carry their baby in a pouch. This is a good idea because it means that the baby doesn't have to hop along wit.h Mum, and get tired out.

When there is no rain for a while, kangaroos stop having babies.

Some species of kangaroo have died out. One of these was called a procoptodon. It was taller than a six foot man.

When a kangaroo is hopping along at an easy pace, it can do 3 metres per hop, but when it is being chased it can do 8 metres (27 feet) per hop!

See if you can hop 8 metres!
