Wording of this Handout:

How does a sperm whale clean itself?

There are no sperm whale cleaning factories in the ocean, so the sperm whale has to rely on a bird.

The bird is called a grey phalarope (Fal - a - rope) and the amazing thing about the whole cleaning job is the timing.

Some how the phalarope knows how to swoop down and peck the little shells and things off the whale's body just as it comes up to take a breath.

It only has a few seconds to do this, so it has to know exactly where and when the whale is a few seconds before it rises to the surface of the sea.

The whale needs the phalarope to keep its skin clean, and the phalarope needs the whale for the food it pecks off.

When God created this world, He made many animals (like whales and birds) work together to help each other.
