Wording of this Handout:

Bug

A bug with aspirations said,
"A thought just popped into my head
"I've figured out why I was born!
I have to climb the Matterhorn!"

His friends the other bugs were shocked,
And any plans he made - they blocked.
"You won't survive!" Mum said in fear,
"You have no woolly underwear!"

But undeterred the bug set off,
Without a blister, pain, or cough,
And reached the white and freezing snow,
Where temperatures were way below.

He trudged for long and tiresome weeks,
And kept his eyes upon the peaks,
But finally he stopped to rest,
And realized his Mum knew best.

"I should have brought my underwear!"
The bug said, with a frozen tear,
"I'm going home, I've had enough,
This mountaineering's far to tough!"

My slug

I have a little slug - my pet,
He's gray and soft and sticky,
But Mum can't stand the sight of him
(She's often very picky.)

So bugs, you'd better listen in,
Before a journey you begin,
Its very good to have no fear,
But don't forget your underwear!

I take him out for walks each day,
He never goes too quickly
Just down a cabbage leaf or two
(But Mum thinks this is sickly.)

He sleeps beside me on the bed,
When birds have stopped their cheeping,
(But Mum comes in sometimes and tries
To kill him while he's sleeping.)

At Sundays he sits on my head,
And listens hard to teacher,
In church he prays and sings along,
(But Mum's informed the preacher.)

One day my slug will have a job,
And kids to raise - with pride,
(But Mum won't have a bar of this
She wants him dead, outside.)

I have to choose, the slug, or Mum?
It really is a catch
I'll keep the slug, and Mum can live
Out in the vege patch.
