Wording of this Handout:
The Emperor of Russia wanted to know what his people were like. He could not know because wherever he went, he had to wear his royal clothes, and when people saw him coming they would shout praise and gather to admire him.
So Peter decided to disguise himself. He told his servants what he was doing and asked them to keep it a secret, then he stepped down from his magnificent throne and left the castle.
He put on old clothes and went to work at the docks, where the men helped to build the ships.
It was hard work, and Peter went to his little house every evening feeling tired out. He ate the food of common labourers, and he wore their clothes, and his only comfort was a little bed in a workman's hut.
But Peter never stopped being the Emperor of Russia, did he? It didn't matter what he wore, or what he ate, he was still the supreme and absolute ruler of that huge country!
This is how it was for Jesus too.
When Jesus left his glorious throne in heaven, he was still the Son of the his father, the Everlasting God. When Jesus came to earth and lived in a poor home, working and eating along with other people, he was still the Creator and Ruler of the universe!
