Wording of this Handout:

WEDGES

Have you ever watched someone splitting logs with a wedge?

First the wedge is inserted into the wood and then hammered.
The further the wedge goes in, the wider it is, and the bigger the split.

A wedge can teach us quite a few things.
1. A wedge starts with a very thing edge, but eventually that thin edge becomes a big piece of metal, which can cause a lot of damage to a very strong piece of wood.

2. The sides of a wedge never meet. They just get further and further apart.

Imagine if you and a friend were small enough to walk along a very, very long wedge. At the start, you and your friend would be able to talk to each other, and enjoy the walk, but after a while you would find the distance between yourself and your friend growing wider and wider.

If you kept walking for long enough, you would be so far away form your friend that you couldn't even see him!

This is a bit like what happens when someone decides to follow Jesus. At first they seem to be walking the same way as everyone else, but gradually Jesus leads his followers upward towards heaven, and away for the sinful world.

Perhaps you are standing at the thin edge of the wedge right now? If you follow the downward path, you will never get to heaven, but is you follow Jesus you will be sure to get there.
