Wording of this Handout:

When Jesus was 12 years old, he was taken by his parents to Jerusalem. At that time Jesus may have had several brothers and sisters. His brothers names were James, Joses, jura, and Simon, but the Bible does not tell us his sister's names.

Jesus was the eldest child, and it was a special age, because when a a Jewish boy reached 12 he was taken to the great Temple in jerusalem and recognized as "a son of the law" This made such boys feel very grown up, but it also meant they had more responsibilities.

Many families came to Jerusalem at this time, for their sons, and also because it was the Passover celebration. This was when the people remembered a time when the angel of death "PASSED OVER" all the houses where there was blood splashed on the door - to find out about this, read Exodus chapter 12.

When the celebration was over, Mary and Joseph, Jesus' parents, began to walk home with the crowds of the other people. Because Jesus was always such a good boy, they did not worry about him, but after three days they suddenly realized he wasn't with them! They had to go back to Jerusalem to find him.

They found him in the Temple, and when they told him they had been looking for him, all he said was "Didn't you know I must be about my Father's business?"

Even at twelve, Jesus knew had had a mission in life for God - do you?
