Wording of this Handout:

In our country, we have a law which says drivers must keep to the left. That's a good law. It prevents confusion - and crashes.

We have many other good laws. For example people are not allowed to smoke in busses, people are not allowed to pick flowers from public gardens, people are not allowed to tip oil into gutters, people are not allowed to spray words all over other people's fences, people are not allowed to punch each other on the street. . . a and so on.

We live in a society which is cram-packed with laws, and usually they are there for a good reason. Laws protect us and other people. They give us security and keep society orderly. Without laws no-one would be safe from assault or robbery.

All good law has its roots in the Bible. That is because God loves law. He started giving laws to people as soon as He created them, and down through the centuries He kept giving them new laws. The Old Testament contains about 600 laws, and Jesus added many more variations to them.

Humans are, by nature, lovers of law. Give children a playtime together and they will make up rules. Go to any sport and you will see it played by rules. If we don't have them we make them up. The whole legal profession exists because of rules. Rules are part of everything we do.

The Bible says "Every law of God is right, whatever it concerns." Psalm 119:128 (The Living Bible paraphrase)
