Wording of this Handout:
This is a very common statement. People from every culture and nation will tell you that they believe in God - but which God do they believe in? And does it do them any good to believe in God anyway?
First of all, there is only one God, and He is found only in the Bible. All other versions of this God are counterfeits, or shabby copies. Satan has cooked up a 'god' to suit every nation, and every person, because he doesn't want people to worship the true one.
Secondly, it does people no good at all to "believe in God" even if they happen to believe in the true God. Just believing that there is a God is not enough. Even Satan believes in God!! and I'm sure Satan won't be in heaven for believing in God!
In the New Testament, the word "believe" means "obey" or "be subject to". If we used the word the same way today we could say "That soldier believes in his commander", or "That servant believes in his king". So when I say "I believe in Jesus" what I am really saying is "I try to obey Jesus".
So just "believing" in God is not enough. We have to first decide which is the true God, and then we have to place our lives at His disposal - otherwise we are talking nonsense.
The Bible says: "You believe that there is one God; you do well: the devils also believe, and tremble" James 2:19 (King James Version)
