Wording of this Handout:
The Lord my Provider.
Through the Old Testament, God has given us ten different names for Himself. Each name tells us something about Him - just as each uniform you see on someone tells you something of what the person wearing the uniform does.
There is a Christian song which goes "Jehovah Jireh. my provider. His grace is sufficient for me..." and in some ways this is correct, but where did God give this name, and what sort of provision is it connected to?
Abraham was called by God to offer up his only son Isaac as a sacrifice to God. Abraham was obedient, all the way to the point when he was about to strike with the knife, but then, suddenly, God told him t stop - and a ram appeared, caught by its horns in a bush. Abraham gladly offered the ram instead of his son.
The ran is a symbol of Jesus, who made himself the offering for all people. This is what the name Jehovah Jireh applies to - the death offering for you and my sins.
Jehovah Jireh means Jehovah will see, or provide. Provide what? Redemption.
The Bible says; "And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah Jireh." Genesis 22:14 (King James Version)
