Wording of this Handout:

Mary the virgin.

Many people object to the idea that Jesus was born of a virgin. They say it is impossible - and biologically speaking it is - but God is a miracle-worker, so it is no trouble to him. Here is how the Bible defends itself:

Genesis 3:15 says that the "seed of the woman" would crush Satan. (Not the seed of the man)

The royal family tree was cursed on one branch, by God, so that no man from that branch would ever become the King of Israel...that branch ended with Joseph, the legal (but not natural) father of Jesus. If Jesus had come from Joseph, God's Word would have bee in error.

Isaiah 7:14 says "The virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." This can only be about Jesus. Immanuel means "God with us."

The Hebrew word for: "Virgin" appears six times in the Bible and its usage always means "virgin" - not "young woman" or something vague. Matthew quoted Isaiah's prophecy (Matt. 1:23) and pointed it at Jesus

The most important point though is the fact that Jesus had to be human, but he also had to avoid inheriting the sinful nature, so God combined in some mysterious way with the woman's ovum and produced a perfect combination of God and human without sin.

The Bible says, "But in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent of God...to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary," Luke 1:26 (King James version)
