Wording of this Handout:

The Amazing Golden Touch

Once upon a time there was a very rich king whose name was Midas. In spite of all the gold, and silver, and silks and satins, and precious stones he owned, he was never satisfied with his wealth. And the king also had one daughter, whom he loved dearly.

Every day King Midas looked at all his gold. He held it in his hands, and sat in rooms full of it, and he dreamed of a day when all the world was made of gold-and all the gold belonged to him.

One day, when King Midas was dreaming about having more gold than he ever needed, a stranger appeared.

"What would make you happy?" asked the stranger.

"Gold!" said the king, "Gold everywhere!"

"Would you like it if everything you touched turned to gold?"

"Yes!" said the king.

"Then your wish is granted," said the stranger. "But beware! Gold will not make you happy."

The king ignored the stranger's words and started to touch things. He turned the room into gold, and the stairs, and all the tables and chairs and cups and saucers and carpets...until his whole palace shone like the sunshine.
