Wording of this Handout:
The Christian life is usually full of ups and downs. It hardly ever runs smoothly for very long. This is because life itself is never the same day by day. We are always in a state of change - our age, our interests, our jobs, our friends, and all the other things happening around us, all are constantly changing.
And there are times when we feel like we have been dropped in the ocean, likes corks at the mercy of the waves. We call out to God, but He doesn't' seem to hear. The trial just keeps going, and sometimes things get even worse!
At times like this we must go back in our memory, and think about all the times when God has been obviously there in our lives. We must, in our minds, return to times when we were at rest in God. And to that personal experience, we can add the hundreds of examples in the Bible, when God helped other people.
This is called self-encouragement, and it really works.
The Bible says "Return to your rest, O my soul, for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you."
(Psalm 116:7 New King James Version)
