Wording of this Handout:

Your Language

You speak a language, and so do I, and so do all your friends, but have you ever stopped to wonder at how amazingly complex your language is? There are hundreds of inbuilt rules, hundreds of ways of saying things, hundreds of variations, and a whole system of grammar already installed.

There are more than 250,000 words in the English language, but you probably only know about 10% of them. Only great writers like Shakespeare and Dickens knew more than 30% of their own language, and dictionaries are packed with words you've never even heard of let alone used.

Yet language (all language) keeps growing, and new words keep coming into it as old ones leave. This is why we can be sure that the first languages which God created at the tower of Babel are not exactly the same ones we have today.

But there is something about language which is very important. God created it for humans to use, and He uses it to communicate with us too. God has also written a book - the Bible - and God has spoken to us - through Jesus.

The Bible says, "Then King Darius wrote unto all the people, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied unto you." Daniel 6:25 (New King James Version)
