Wording of this Handout:
Our amazing moon.
God made the moon on day 4. He called it the "lesser light" as compared to the "greater light" the sun.
He made the moon to "rule the night" and He tells us that it has several uses: 1. To give light on the earth, 2. To mark signs and seasons, 3. And to mark days and years.
The moon lights the earth because it reflects the sun like a mirror. If the moon was made of a different kind of rock it would not reflect so well. If it was smaller it would fall apart because it would not have enough gravity to hold it together. If it was larger it would tend to spiral toward the earth and crash!
The moon is four times smaller than earth. It turns once every revolution so we never see its other side. The moon creates tides, which cause oxygen to mix with the water when the waves break on the shores.
Every year them moon is 4cm further away from earth. If you calculate backwards, it is clear that the moon must be young, because if it was millions of years old it would not be there!
What's so romantic about the moon - It's just a big, round lump of dead rock!
The Bible says "In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endures." Psalm 72:7 (King James Version)
