Wording of this Handout:
How We See Things
I was in Christchurch one day when a Christian friend of mine started to tell me what he thought of the city...
"It's in terrible bondage," he said, and there's a heavy cloud of spiritual darkness hanging over it. The gospel won't get far here. Too much religion!"
I thought about Jesus as he went towards Jerusalem. At that time there were perhaps 20,000 priests - plenty of religion. And there were Pharisees and Sadducees, and Levites, and zealots, and people from other countries with their own religious beliefs...I suppose Jesus should have given up on such a city.
But jesus was never put off by opposition, either real or imaginary. Neither should we be. If God gives us a job to do, we should keep our eyes on that job and not look anywhere else.
The Bible says that Jesus said, "I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest."
John 4:35
