Wording of this Handout:

Jacob's Dream

One day Jacob ran away from home. He had cheated his brother Esau out of the birthright blessing, and Esau was very angry about it. (Mind you, the birthright blessing was Jacob's anyway, and if he'd trusted God about it he would have got it anyway, but he interfered, and ended up running!)

On his way to Haran, to stay with Laban, Jacob lay down for the night. He gathered a little pile of stones together and made a pillow (!) and went to sleep. Then he had a dream

In his dream he saw a ladder, which stretched from earth to heaven, and then he saw angels, going up the ladder and coming down the ladder. (I imagine that this dream-ladder was more like a huge, and grand staircase.)

Jacob then saw God, standing at the top of the ladder, and God gave him some wonderful promises. But what Jacob saw, when he saw God, was Jesus.

There is a fancy word for this - the pre-incarnate Jesus - which means the "before-he-was-in-the-body" Jesus.

Can you think of other times when Jesus appeared to people before the New Testament times? One of these appearances was to Adam and Eve, and another was in the fiery furnace, when Daniel's three friends were supposed to be burned to death.

Jesus is the Son of God, eternal with the Father, and as such he was the one who created this world.. But when Jesus came as a human, in a real human's body, he died for the whole human race. By dying Jesus made a way for all people to be saved, and so make a ladder for people to reach heaven, and God to reach earth.

Jesus is the ladder.

The Bible says, "I am with you and will keep you wherever you go."
