Alone

by Michael Cohern © 1958

There are times I say
to be alone,
to think your thoughts
to make atone.

But I say to you
they can't always be,
for being alone
can't guarantee.

We can't always think
of the things we've done,
with loneliness in us
we are no one.

It impares judgement
it causes grief,
sometimes it makes
a boy a thief.

For who can think
with anger raising?
And who can love
with pain blazing?

This story was told
by a nine year old,
who cried at seven
when he was sold.

The boy grew up
with only one friend,
his name was Jesus
and he helped him mend.

This story is true
don't you see?
that boy is real
that boy was me...
