This Cup is Too Full

by Jeff Bidiman

How I thirst for the life giving water
To quench this desire inside of me.
The ever flowing, sacred elixir,
Which swells from the well of divinity.

But this cup is too full of worldly wine,
And there is no room for anything more.
So how can I drink this draft so divine,
When it spills over and onto the floor?

Help me, oh Lord, to empty myself of
These things which prevent me from drinking in
The goodness of your pure fountain of love;
Help me to empty this cup full of sin.

Drain this clay chalice of pride and conceit,
Pour out its envious, backbiting ways,
Spill out this liquid which leads to defeat,
Fill it with peace for the rest of its days.

How I thirst for Your Holy Spirit, Lord,
To quench this great longing inside of me.
Let me drink from the deep well of Your word,
And savor the taste of eternity.
