A Chance Encounter

by Jeffrey Zachary

I met a man today, who said;
"Tis a beautiful day for a walk, instead!";
I glanced at him and wryly thought;
"Yeah? walking as opposed to what?"; (flap, flap, flap...)

His comment made me stop and think, though;
Of this fast-paced world through which
we fly so;
Never stopping to smell those roses;
Not once pond'ring the many choices;
We face each day- be it simple things;
Like, "Hmmm..potato chips or onion
rings?";
Or, deeper matters, more obtuse-
"Which spiritual path and how to choose?";
It occured to me in my harried haste;
That neglecting decisions begets much
waste;
opportunities missed, the roads passed by;
The ones less-traveled, both far and nigh;
I began to glimpse these other worlds;
Like so many banners to be unfurled;
I turned to the man and said, "You're
Right- it's a wonderful day, it's warm,
It's bright";
"Would you mind if I chose to walk with you?";
The Man only smiled, and said, "Son, let's do!".
