Taking the Dry Road

by Scott C McGrath © 2014

Can't go back, Lord
Done destroyed by stray
Still yesterday is begging me
to trash today

Can't go back, Lord
This desire never ends
There's just no wiggle room
both knee & heart must bend

Sun up,
white knuckles
Sun down,
I buckle

It's not that I get so thirsty
near the end of the day
But I'll catch any big blurry bus
along New Mindset Way

Make me look good, Lord
For appearance sake
Get them helicopter eyes
on some other failure's wake

Make me look good, Lord
No more black sheep jokes
Even when they're funny
Need away from these folks

Too angry,
I'm blaming
Too happy,
Same ol' saming

Ironic now I look at
what turned me to slave
Forget booze & crystal meth
now it's trust that I crave

Your way, Lord
Need indwelling of Your flame
For to face those I disappointed
cures the poison of buried shame

Your way, Lord
Being uncomfortable's the rule
No more bad-day exceptions
No more unplugged fool

Drunkard
embraced
Transgressions
erased

But it's not just fear of God
that rules my day
Rather, the love of the Lord
strengthens my no to old ways
